What is an Allen Bolt?

A fastener with a cylindrical head and a hexagonal socket drive. Designed for high-torque applications and recessed installations where external wrench clearance is limited.


Material

  • Alloy Steel: Most common for high strength; grades 10.9, 12.9 (Cr-Mo).

  • Stainless Steel: A2 (304) general purpose, A4 (316) marine grade.

  • Carbon Steel: Grades 4.8, 8.8 for general use.

  • Titanium: Grade 5 for aerospace/motorsports (strength-to-weight ratio).


Surface Finishes

  • Zinc Plating: Standard corrosion protection (72h+ salt spray).

  • Zinc-Nickel: High-performance (144h+ salt spray), low hydrogen embrittlement.

  • Black Oxide: Mild corrosion resistance, cosmetic finish.

  • Passivation: For stainless steel, removes free iron.

  • PTFE/Xylan: Low friction, chemical resistant.
