What are Countersunk Washers?

Countersunk washers, also known as flat countersunk washers, are specialized ring-shaped fasteners. They feature a conical shape that matches the angle of a countersunk screw head, typically 90 degrees. Their primary function is to provide a smooth, flush surface when the screw is fully tightened, preventing the fastener from protruding. They also help to distribute the load of the screw head over a larger area, protecting the material from damage.


Materials

Countersunk washers are manufactured from a variety of materials to suit different environments and strength requirements.

  • Stainless Steel: Offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for outdoor, marine, and food processing applications. Common grades include 304 and 316.

  • Zinc Plated: A common and economical finish for carbon steel, offering good corrosion resistance. It can be clear, yellow, or blue in appearance.

  • Passivated: A chemical treatment for stainless steel that removes free iron and enhances its natural corrosion resistance.

  • Black Oxide: A cosmetic finish that provides mild corrosion resistance and reduces light reflection. Often used in automotive and tooling applications.

  • Hot-Dip Galvanized: A thick zinc coating applied by immersion, providing heavy-duty corrosion protection for outdoor and industrial use.


Common Specifications

Countersunk washers are defined by several key specifications to ensure proper fit and function.

  • Diameter (Screw Size): Designed to fit specific screw sizes, such as M3, M4, M6 (metric) or #6, #8, 1/4″ (inch).

  • Outer Diameter (OD): The overall width of the washer, which determines the load-bearing surface area.

  • Inner Diameter (ID): The hole size through which the screw shank passes.

  • Angle: The angle of the countersunk taper, which is almost universally 90° for metric screws and 82° for many inch-based screws, though 100° is also common for certain sheet metal screws.

  • Material Thickness: The overall height of the washer, including the conical section.

An Excellent Case: Marine Teak Decking

A classic example of countersunk washers in action is during the installation of a teak deck on a luxury yacht.

The process begins by pre-drilling holes through the teak planks and into the underlying deck structure. A countersink drill bit is then used to create a shallow, conical recess in the teak. A countersunk washer, made from marine-grade 316 stainless steel, is placed into this recess. Finally, a 316 stainless steel countersunk screw is driven through the washer and into the pilot hole.

As the screw is tightened, its head seats perfectly into the conical shape of the washer, which in turn sits flush within the recess in the teak. The result is an absolutely smooth deck surface with no protruding metal. This is critical for safety (preventing tripping and barefoot injuries), longevity (preventing water from pooling around the screw head and rotting the wood), and aesthetics (maintaining the clean, unbroken lines of the beautiful teak deck). The 316 stainless steel material ensures the fasteners withstand the harsh, saltwater marine environment for years without corroding.
