What are Countersunk Washers?

Countersunk washers, also known as flat countersunk washers, are specialized ring-shaped fasteners. The process begins by pre-drilling holes through the teak planks and into the underlying deck structure. A countersink drill bit is then used to create a shallow, conical recess in the teak. A countersunk washer, made from marine-grade 316 stainless steel, is placed into this recess. Finally, a 316 stainless steel countersunk screw is driven through the washer and into the pilot hole.

As the screw is tightened, its head seats perfectly into the conical shape of the washer, which in turn sits flush within the recess in the teak.
