What Are Sleeve Anchor Bolts?

Sleeve anchor bolts are medium to heavy-duty mechanical expansion anchors designed for fastening fixtures to solid base materials such as concrete, brick, and block . They consist of a threaded bolt with a cone-shaped end, over which an expander sleeve is assembled . During installation, tightening the nut or head draws the cone up through the sleeve, forcing it to expand against the walls of the pre-drilled hole . This creates a secure, torque-controlled mechanical hold that is also removable . They are often referred to as “loose bolt” anchors, as the bolt can be removed after installation .

Materials of Sleeve Anchor Bolts

  • Carbon Steel (Mild Steel): Available in various grades, including 4.6, 5.6, and 4.8, offering a cost-effective solution for standard indoor applications .

  • High-Tensile Steel: Grades 8.8 and 10.9 are available for applications requiring higher load capacity .

  • Stainless Steel: Type 304 (A2) provides general corrosion resistance for indoor and mild outdoor use . Type 316 (A4) offers superior resistance to chlorides and harsh chemicals, making it ideal for marine and chemical environments .

  • Other Alloys: Materials such as brass, copper, and titanium are available for specialized applications requiring specific electrical or corrosion-resistant properties .

Surface Finishes

  • Zinc Plated: A common, economical finish for carbon steel, providing moderate corrosion resistance .

  • Yellow Zinc Passivated (ZYP): Offers enhanced corrosion protection with a distinctive gold or iridescent appearance .

  • Hot-Dip Galvanized: A thick, durable zinc coating for high corrosion resistance in harsh outdoor environments .

  • Plain (Uncoated): Standard finish for stainless steel anchors, relying on the material’s natural passive layer for protection .

  • Specialty Finishes: Options like black phosphate, nickel passivation, and PTFE (Xylan) coatings are available for specific performance requirements .

Specifications

  • Diameter Range: Available from M6 to over M100 in metric sizes . Inch sizes typically range from 1/4″ to at least 1/2″ .

  • Length Range: Varies by diameter and application, from short anchors of 25mm up to lengths exceeding 150mm to accommodate different fixture thicknesses .

  • Thread Types: Offered in metric (coarse and fine) and imperial (UNC, UNF, BSW) threads, either fully or partially threaded .

  • Head Styles: Commonly available with a hex head for use with spanners or sockets , as well as countersunk heads for flush mounting .

  • Drill Hole Size: The required drill bit diameter is typically the same as the nominal anchor size . Minimum embedment depths vary by product and diameter .

Application Areas

  • Heavy-Duty Attachments: Securing structural elements like racking, balustrades, handrails, and holding down machinery .

  • Construction: Fixing timber and steel plates, joists for decking, and dock bumpers to concrete and masonry .

  • Temporary Fixings: Ideal for applications requiring later removal, such as heavy-duty formwork, as the internal bolt is removable and reusable .

  • Hollow Base Materials: Suitable for use in hollow block and brick, where the sleeve expands and locks behind the void .

  • General Purpose Fixing: Used for everyday fastening tasks like attaching radiators or mounting fixtures in homes and commercial buildings .

An Excellent Case: High-Volume Production of Sleeve anchor bolts

Situation: A global manufacturer of industrial pumps needed to assemble a new line of heavy-duty pump mounts. The process required securing steel base plates to concrete foundations with a high degree of reliability against vibration. The previous method involved post-installed anchors, which added an extra step and was too slow for the target production volume.

Task: The engineering team sought a fastening solution that could be pre-assembled to the base plate and installed quickly on-site. The anchor needed to provide high load capacity, be removable for equipment servicing, and meet strict ASTM quality standards.

Action: The design specified the use of 1/2″ x 2-3/4″ 304 Stainless Steel Heavy-Duty Power-Bolt® Sleeve Anchor Bolts . These Sleeve anchor bolts were pre-fitted into the base plates at the factory. On-site, workers drilled a precise hole, inserted the pre-assembled plate and anchor, and tightened the hex head. The two-level expansion mechanism of the Power-Bolt® created a high-strength hold deep in the concrete, while its integrated compression ring ensured the base plate was pulled tight against the foundation .

Result: The use of these sleeve anchor bolts streamlined the installation, significantly reducing on-site labor time. The removable bolt feature allowed for easy pump servicing. The manufacturer successfully scaled production, with the anchor’s proven conformance to ASTM E488 providing the necessary quality assurance for their global customers .
