What is a Panel Ground Bar?

A Panel Ground Bar (also called Grounding BusbarEarth Bar, or Terminal Ground Bar) is a metallic strip, typically made of copper, installed inside electrical panels, breaker boxes, switchgear, and control cabinets. Its primary function is to provide a centralized connection point for all grounding (earth) wires within an electrical system.

By consolidating multiple ground wires onto a single bar, it ensures that all metallic, non-current-carrying parts of the installation are bonded together and connected to the earth. This creates a safe path for fault currents, protects equipment from surges, and reduces electrical noise.

Materials of Panel Ground Bar

MaterialDescription
Copper (ETP Copper)Industry standard. Excellent conductivity, high corrosion resistance, durable.
High Conductivity Copper99.9% pure copper for maximum electrical performance in critical applications.
BrassCopper-zinc alloy. Good conductivity, higher mechanical strength than pure copper.
AluminumLightweight and cost-effective. Lower conductivity than copper, requires larger cross-section.
SteelUsed for specific mechanical grounding, not typical for standard panel ground bars.

Surface Finishes of Panel Ground Bar

FinishDescriptionBenefits
Tin PlatedLayer of tin electroplated onto copper. Most common. Prevents oxidation, maintains conductivity, low-resistance connections.
Silver PlatedThin silver layer on copper.Highest conductivity, excellent for high-frequency applications, superior corrosion resistance.
Nickel PlatedNickel layer applied to copper.Excellent corrosion resistance in harsh environments, hard durable surface.
Bare CopperNo additional finish, natural copper.Lowest cost, oxidizes over time, suitable for dry indoor environments only.
Anti-Oxidant CoatedBare copper with protective coating.Protects during storage, coating penetrates at connection points for metal-to-metal contact.

Data Center Server Room Installation

A telecommunications company is setting up a new data center with multiple server racks. Each rack contains sensitive networking equipment that requires reliable grounding to prevent data corruption from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and to protect against power surges.

The Solution:
The electrician installs a Premium Heavy Duty Tin-Plated Copper Panel Ground Bar inside the main power distribution panel that feeds the server room. The ground bar has the following specifications:

  • Material: C11000 ETP Copper (99.9% purity)

  • Finish: Tin-plated for corrosion resistance and long-term reliability

  • Dimensions: 1/4″ thick x 1″ wide x 12″ long

  • Configuration: No pre-drilled holes (custom drilled on-site to match specific terminal positions)

  • Rating: 400A capacity for future expansion

Installation Process:

  1. The ground bar is mounted inside the panel using insulated standoffs to maintain isolation from the enclosure.

  2. All branch circuit ground wires from each server rack are terminated on the bar using compression lugs.

  3. The main bonding jumper connects the ground bar to the neutral bar at the service disconnect.

  4. A ground electrode conductor runs from the bar to the building’s grounding electrode system (copper-clad rods driven into earth).

  5. Additional surge protection devices are connected to the ground bar to divert transient voltages.

The Result:

  • During a nearby lightning strike, surge currents are safely diverted to earth through the ground bar, protecting $2 million worth of server equipment.

  • The common ground reference eliminates ground loops that could cause data errors in high-speed network communications.

  • The system passes all electrical inspection requirements and meets NEC Article 250 and UL 467 standards.

  • The tin-plated finish ensures the connections remain corrosion-free for decades, reducing maintenance requirements.

Why This Ground Bar Was the Right Choice:
The custom-drillable configuration allowed precise hole placement for the specific terminal blocks in this installation. The heavy-duty 400A rating provides ample capacity for future equipment additions. The tin-plated copper ensures maximum conductivity while preventing the oxidation that could increase resistance over time. This single ground bar provides a safe, reliable, and code-compliant grounding solution for the entire data center.
