What Are Chemical Anchors?
Chemical anchors, also known as resin anchors, are high-performance fastening systems that consist of a steel rod or threaded bar bonded into a drilled hole using a synthetic adhesive cartridge . Unlike mechanical anchors that rely on friction, chemical anchors use a thermosetting resin to create a molecular bond between the metal element and the base material (concrete, masonry, or natural stone) . This provides superior load capacity and vibration resistance without creating expansion stress in the substrate .
Materials
Resin Types: Polyester (styrene-free options), Vinyl Ester, Epoxy Acrylate, 100% Solids Epoxy
Steel Components: Carbon Steel (Grade 5.8/8.8), Stainless Steel (A2/304, A4/316), Galvanized Steel, Deformed Rebar
Surface Treatment
Resin Finish: Unfinished (chemical cartridge)
Steel Finishes: Zinc Plated, Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG), Geomet Coating, Plain (Oil-Coated)
Specifications
Common Rod Diameters: M8 to M30 (Metric); 1/4″ to 1″ (Imperial)
Standard Embedment Depths: 80mm (M8) to 280mm (M30)
Drill Hole Diameters: 10mm (M8) to 35mm (M30)
Temperature Range: -40°C to +80°C (Polyester); Up to +120°C (Epoxy)
Curing Time: 5-145 minutes (depending on temperature and resin type)
Key Standards: ETA Option 1 (cracked concrete), ETA TR023 (post-installed rebar), LEED EQc4.1, A+ VOC emissions class
Tensile Load Data (M16): Approx. 70.9 kN (destructive load)
Applications
Structural steel column fixing and heavy machinery mounting
Bridge parapets, highway barriers, and safety railings
Curtain wall and facade anchoring systems
Post-installed rebar connections in concrete
Fixing heavy equipment in seismic zones (Category C1 rated)
Overhead fixings and dynamic load applications
Best Practice Case Example
Scenario: Securing a primary structural steel column to a foundation in an industrial facility requiring seismic certification.
Selected System: Two-part Styrene-Free Vinyl Ester Chemical Anchor (e.g., M16 application).
Resin Type: High-performance vinyl ester with static mixer nozzle for correct ratio .
Steel Component: M16 x 190mm threaded rod, Grade 8.8, zinc plated .
Installation Data: 18mm diameter drill hole; 125mm embedment depth; cleaned per protocol (blow 3x, brush 3x); resin injected from bottom; rod inserted with slow rotation (approx. 300-750 rpm) until fully seated .
Performance: Achieves destructive tensile load of approximately 70.9 kN in C25 concrete. System holds ETA Option 1 approval for cracked concrete and seismic Category C1 certification, ensuring structural integrity under dynamic conditions.
