Description
What are Set Screws?
Set screws are a type of fastener designed to secure an object within or against another object, typically without the use of a nut. They are threaded along their entire length or partially threaded and apply clamping force through pressure at their tip. Unlike regular screws, set screws don’t have heads that protrude beyond the surface they’re installed in.
Materials
Carbon Steel – Most common, economical choice
Alloy Steel – Higher strength than carbon steel
Stainless Steel (304 & 316) – Corrosion resistant
Brass – Corrosion resistant, non-magnetic, decorative
Titanium – High strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistant
A2 & A4 Marine Grade Stainless – For harsh environments
Surface Finishes
Plain/Unfinished – No coating, basic protection
Zinc Plated – Common corrosion protection
Black Oxide – Mild corrosion resistance, reduces glare
Hot-Dip Galvanized – Heavy-duty corrosion protection
Nickel Plated – Decorative and corrosion resistant
Chrome Plated – Hard, decorative finish
Phosphate Coated – Improves paint adhesion and corrosion resistance

Excellent Case: Robotic Arm Joint Assembly
Challenge: A robotics manufacturer needed to securely fasten servo motor shafts to robotic arm linkages while allowing for precise angular adjustments during calibration.
Solution: They used cup-point set screws (M6×1.0, 10mm length, alloy steel, black oxide finish) in three key locations:
To secure the harmonic drive to the motor shaft
To fasten the arm linkage to the drive output
To lock the angular position after calibration
Benefits Achieved:
Precise Positioning: Cup point provided excellent grip without damaging shafts
Secure Fastening: High clamping force prevented slippage under dynamic loads
Adjustability: Allowed for fine-tuning during assembly and calibration
Space Saving: Flush installation conserved valuable space in compact joints
Durability: Black oxide finish resisted corrosion in industrial environments
Result: The robotic arms maintained precise alignment through millions of cycles with zero slippage incidents, demonstrating the reliability of properly specified set screws in critical motion applications.
