Description

What Are Titanium Washers?

Titanium washers are flat, ring-shaped components, typically with a central hole, manufactured from titanium or its alloys. They are used in conjunction with bolts and nuts to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, prevent surface damage, reduce friction, and provide spacing. Renowned for their exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and outstanding corrosion resistance, they are a premium choice for demanding applications where standard steel washers would fail.

Material Grades

Titanium washers are made from various grades of titanium, each offering a unique balance of properties. The most common grades include:

  • Grade 2 (Commercially Pure Titanium): Offers excellent corrosion resistance and good formability. It is the most common grade for industrial applications.

  • Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V): An alpha-beta alloy containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. It is the most widely used titanium alloy, providing very high strength, good corrosion resistance, and the ability to be heat treated.

  • Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V): A near-alpha alloy with good strength and superior cold-forming capabilities compared to Grade 5, often used in aerospace tubing and applications requiring formability.

Surface Treatments

To enhance their natural properties or for aesthetic purposes, titanium washers can undergo various surface treatments:

  • Anodizing: An electrochemical process that creates a durable, decorative, and corrosion-resistant oxide layer. It can produce various colors and increase surface hardness.

  • Passivation: A chemical process that removes free iron from the surface and promotes the formation of a protective, inert oxide layer to maximize corrosion resistance.

  • Plating: While less common, washers can be plated with materials like nickel or gold for specific electrical or cosmetic requirements.

Specifications

Titanium washers are available in a wide range of specifications to meet diverse engineering needs:

  • Standards: Manufactured to standards such as ASME, ASTM, MIL, and NAS, or as custom non-standard parts.

  • Types: Include plain washers, flat washers, spring washers, and lock washers.

  • Sizes: Available in various inner diameters (ID), outer diameters (OD), and thicknesses to fit different bolt sizes and load requirements.

Application Fields

The unique properties of titanium make its washers ideal for critical and harsh environments:

  • Aerospace: In aircraft frames, jet engines, and spacecraft where weight savings and strength are paramount.

  • Marine and Offshore: For ships, submarines, and oil rigs due to exceptional resistance to saltwater corrosion.

  • Chemical Processing: In equipment exposed to aggressive chemicals and high temperatures.

  • Medical: For surgical instruments and implantable devices because of its biocompatibility.

  • High-Performance Automotive: In racing engines and chassis to reduce weight without sacrificing strength.

Excellent Case: Corrosion-Free Performance in a Desalination Plant

A desalination plant was experiencing frequent failures of its stainless steel pump components due to severe pitting and crevice corrosion from the highly saline brine. Maintenance shutdowns were costly and disruptive.

Solution: The plant engineers decided to retrofit the critical pump assemblies with fasteners and Grade 2 Titanium Washers.

Outcome: The titanium washers demonstrated complete immunity to the corrosive environment. This single change, along with other titanium components, dramatically extended the service life of the pump assemblies. The plant achieved a significant reduction in unplanned maintenance, increased operational uptime, and realized substantial cost savings, making the initial investment in titanium highly cost-effective.
